Devastating Fire of 1999

On June 16th, The Old Salt Eating & Drinking Place suffered a devastating fire which completely destroyed our restaurant and two adjacent buildings. To this day the cause of the fire is officially unknown but it is believed to have been started by a cigarette tossed onto the exterior stairs of the building next to us. The building held special memories for many people. We know the owners, staff and the many patrons, who made the Old Salt such a special place, will miss it.

We would like to thank all the people who have shown their support and offered their assistance in recovering from this disaster.

The Old Salt Eating & Drinking Place finds a new Home!!!!

The Higgins family, owners of the popular landmark restaurant that was destroyed by fire nearly two years ago, purchased Lamie’s Inn and Tavern in February of 2001. The Higgins family operated The Old Salt in its original location on Ocean Boulevard in Hampton Beach for thirteen years. It was a favorite spot with both tourists and locals, known for it’s fun, casual atmosphere and generous portions of fresh seafood. A devastating fire destroyed The Old Salt and several other businesses in June of 1999. Since then, the family has been struggling to rebuild.

After working extensively with architects and restaurant designers, the family discovered that their original design would be too costly. Due to the huge economic growth in the area, the cost of construction and materials was drastically increasing. When the downsized plans were nearly completed, the Higgins learned that Lamie’s Inn and Tavern was available. Relocating to an existing property made sense economically and the family discovered that the beautiful eighteenth century restaurant and tavern would be the perfect place to recreate the atmosphere that the Old Salt customers loved. Located on Route 1, in the heart of Hampton, Lamie’s is a historic country inn with 32 Colonial rooms, several with romantic canopy beds. The inn is currently open for business.

The Higgins family opened the restaurant and tavern in the end of March 2001 after some renovations in the kitchen and lounge. The dining room boasts an impressive working fireplace and large, wooden booths. There is an additional function room with a fireplace and room for weddings and functions of up to 125 people, as well as additional meeting rooms. Customers can expect the fresh seafood and specialties that the Old Salt is famous for, with some exciting new additions as well.
